Solving an adblue problem on a Liebherr 920 excavator

The 2016 Liebherr 920 excavators (in our case) are equipped with FPT engines (Fiat Powertrain Technologies). FPT engines are known to equip many machines and trucks, notably under Tier 4F and Euro 6 standards. They are managed by a Bosch EDC17 type CV41 engine management system (the famous ECU through which the diesel hoses are routed for cooling).

Despite their reliability, it often happens that the 'exhaust gas treatment' part fails, and you enter a degraded mode reducing engine power after 30 to 45 minutes, to the point of making it totally impossible to use the machine, since power and torque are reduced and no longer allow the various tasks to be carried out.

How to effectively solve the adblue problem on your Liebherr 920 excavator?

When an adblue system component fails, it sends a CAN message to the engine control unit via the vehicle's CAN BUS network. All components send their signals, including the adblue injector, gauge, pump, NOx sensor voltage and all other parts connected to the exhaust aftertreatment system.

Our solution consists of reading the original data from the engine management and exhaust gas treatment program (Bosch EDC17CV41 ECU), and reprogramming all the system's operating data. The operation is carried out with the ECU disassembled, as we have to connect directly to the ECU PINs to extract the data, which is no easy task given its location,

Once the adblue system has been modified, what happens?

Once the data modification is complete, we reassemble the ECU in its place. We can see straight away that the vehicle is no longer in degraded mode, and will not go into it again, since the adblue safety devices have been unlocked. The machine can once again deliver its full power.

By reading the mapping data with dedicated hardware, we can extract the complete information and adjust the data to our customer's requirements. (Increase power, Deactivate Adblue....). This tailor-made programming enables the vehicle to return to its initial operating state, with no fault codes or downgraded modes.
