AdBlue fault on Komatsu PC170 Excavator : Diagnosis and Solutions

Introduction

The AdBlue fault on the Komatsu PC170 Excavator is a recurring problem for many operators. Equipped with a Cummins QSB6.7 engine and a CM2350 ECU, this machine can encounter various faults affecting its operation and performance.

Initial diagnosis

During the course of our work, we noted several faults recorded by the CM2350 ECU. Here are the main fault codes observed and their detailed analysis:

1. 3577 - Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid Return Valve :
   • Description: Higher-than-normal voltage or short-circuit to a high-voltage source.
   • Impact: This fault can lead to malfunction of the AdBlue fluid return, compromising the emission control system.
2. • 4863 - Aftertreatment SCR Operator Inducement Active :
     • Description: Existing condition.
     • Impact: Indicates that the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is active, which may limit performance if faults persist.
3. 3714 - Engine Protection Torque Derate :
   • Description: Existing condition.
   • Impact: Reduction of motor torque to protect the motor, usually triggered by other critical faults.
4. 3497 - Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank Level :
   • Description: Valid data but below normal operating range - Least severe level.
   • Impact: Low AdBlue fluid levels can prevent effective emissions reduction, leading to penalties and reduced performance.
5. 4277 - Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality :
   • Description: abnormal rate of change.
   • Impact: Fluctuating AdBlue fluid quality can affect the efficiency of the exhaust aftertreatment system.

Solution provided

To solve these problems, we took the following steps:

1. Use the appropriate diagnostic tool to analyze and confirm faults.
2. Complete machine programming, including AdBlue fault removal.
3. Flash data and update the CM2350 ECU with new operating values using factory software in engineering mode.
4. Deactivation of faulty anti-pollution devices to ensure optimal machine operation.

Results

Thanks to this intervention, the Komatsu PC170 Excavator has regained its full original power and torque. By eliminating the AdBlue faults and updating the ECU parameters, the interruptions and performance reductions caused by the initial faults were eliminated.
