Troubleshooting Mercedes Arocs Euro 6 DPFS and Adblue for export

We were entrusted with the task of resolving a problem with the Mercedes Arocs DPFS and Adblue, with a view to exporting it to Tunisia. The truck presented a number of dysfunctional symptoms. Firstly, a completely blocked particle filter, which no longer allowed exhaust gases to escape, and a major failure of the AdBlue (SCR) system, pump, injector and problem in the SCR catalytic converter. The Mercedes bill is looking high (over €10,000) to get everything up and running again, despite the fact that the truck is designed to drive in a non-Euro country, so anti-pollution devices are not compulsory. Here's how it was done.

Step 1: Complete vehicle diagnostics using our manufacturer's tools

A quick inspection reveals any faults in the emission control system. The verdict is clear: the DPFS and Adblue are out of order. The particle filter on this Mercedes Arocs Euro 6 is totally clogged, making regeneration impossible. Exhaust gases are virtually non-existent, and backpressure is building up in the intake and turbo (rapidly leading to consequent breakage of the turbo and even the engine if turbo components pass into the block).

Step 2: Empty the particulate filter, break off the clogged ceramic or, if possible, remove the large cartridge directly.

The second part of the job is to physically remove the particulate filter, which is completely clogged, so to avoid turbo and engine failure, exhaust gases must be able to escape. Our customer will therefore take care of the physical mechanical part on this Arocs.

Consequences of a clogged particulate filter on Mercedes Arocs Euro 6 and faulty Adblue system

The consequences of a clogged particulate filter on a Mercedes Euro 6 are manifold: in our case, the filter was completely clogged and the exhaust gases were no longer escaping, or even worse, were rising up in the intake and turbo, and sometimes even preventing the vehicle from starting up properly due to excessive exhaust pressure resistance. The second consequence is that the vehicle finds itself in a totally degraded mode, preventing it from driving properly since engine power and torque are totally reduced, the truck no longer pulls, you can hardly work with it, and it's even advisable not to use it any more to avoid any breakage.

The exhaust gas aftertreatment fault, when present, not only causes degraded operation, but can also, in some cases, restrict the maximum speed of your Arocs to 20km/h.

Stage 3: Electronic intervention on the complete system and removal of anti-pollution components

Our operation consists of extracting the truck's configuration via our specialized software. To do this, we need to connect directly to the MCM (Motor Control Module) to retrieve the parameters from the internal engine control software. We also need to intervene on the same box, but called ACM (After Treatment Control Module), to remove any fault codes present. We'll also take the opportunity to deactivate the EGR valve in the MCM, to prevent the intake system from being clogged by exhaust gas recirculation. Our customer also asked us to increase the vehicle's engine power and torque to reduce fuel consumption, so we programmed the injection parameters on this Mercedes and increased power to 510hp and torque by 250Nm.

Stage 4: FAP SCR calibration, data verification, testing and validation

Final resolution: Once our reprogramming is complete, we run the Xentry system to reset the FAP values and the soot level, and if the SCR faults concerning NOx are not cleared, we do this manually.
Following this, we carry out a road test to check that the warning lights on the dashboard are no longer visible, and that the vehicle has recovered its power and is no longer in degraded mode.
