    Introduction to Scania R500 reprogramming

    Our work on the Scania R500 DC13 155, known as NextGen at Scania, consisted in improving the vehicle's performance while retaining the anti-pollution devices, i.e. the DPFS and Adblue. The DC13 155 engine equipping this vehicle is of development level 6 and engine generation 2. Its 13-liter displacement delivers 2550Nm of torque and 500hp of power. Note in passing that this is the unbridled version of the 450 (DC13 148) and not a bridled 540, which makes all the difference to the final gains.

    Reprogramming Scania R500What gains can be made on an R500 NextGen by retaining the emission devices?

    Engine reprogramming on the R500, while retaining the emission monitoring devices, is still advantageous. To avoid saturating the DPF, we limit injection rates a little more to prevent the particulate filter from clogging at high speed. Correctly revised AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) management, i.e. the quantity of fuel injected in relation to the quantity of air, keeps the vehicle as clean as original.

    However, the performance we achieve is a little below that of an R500 that we could reprogram for export or exhibition use, without FAP or Adblue. On an R500 Stage 1 (AFR), we go from 500hp to around 550/560hp, while engine torque rises from 2550Nm to around 2750Nm.

    Reprogramming an R500 of this generation is carried out via the diagnostic socket located at the passenger's feet. We do not disassemble any engine ECUs to perform the operation.

    Is the speed limit adjustable?

    Yes, on a NextGen, you can configure the cruise control. Note that this is your responsibility. We don't affect the tacho, but the speed at which the truck can climb on the pedal or the regulator. This being the case, if you stay too long at an excessive speed, this will be recorded on the driver's card. Be sure to check that this is legal before proceeding. We can increase or decrease the speed to suit your needs.
