How to drive a Scania R590 with free exhaust?
Switch to free at will and without defect
Our intervention on this Scania R590 enabled our customer to drive with free exhaust without any fault on the dashboard. The system consists of a complete reprogramming of the vehicle in order to permanently or temporarily (on switch) deactivate the anti-pollution system.
Explanations
On this new-generation R590, the engine ECU is different from the old 580/650: it's the Continental EMS10 management unit, which was still impenetrable just a few months ago. By now, our solution has been developed, tested and approved. We have equipped several trucks of this generation, such as the R530/R590/R660 and even some R770s.
Free-exhaust driving with your R590 is therefore possible and fault-free. We reprogram the data in the engine management system to inhibit any fault feedback between the EEC (emission control) and EMS (engine management) units. In other words, you can use your valves 100% of the time if you wish, without having to worry about engine power and torque restrictions in xx hours.
Activation on switch possible
If you wish, it is possible to drive in closed-flap mode with the emission control system activated. All you need to do is install a switch on the vehicle's CAN network from the EEC gearbox. This will enable you to select whether you want to run in free mode or not, before each truck start-up.
This also enables the system to be activated as originally intended, so that the vehicle can pass roadworthiness tests, although in its original configuration, at the time of writing this article, this poses no problems.
Improved engine torque and acceleration
Power enhancement is also possible on the R590, since it's an electronically bridled R660. In other words, it's possible to unbridle it and convert it to a 660 very easily, then reprogram it as a 660 (approx. 720hp).
