Revised engine management on Scania V8 NextGen Phase 1 with variable geometry turbo

For several years now, we've been receiving frequent calls from Scania V8 owners for Scania S580 V8 reprogramming, whether it's for valve installation, the removal of a restrictive device or defect, or to improve engine performance and fuel consumption, which at the time of writing is in excess of €2 per liter.

    Scania V8 DC16 106 engine reprogramming explained

First, let's talk about engine reprogramming on the Scania V8 580 to improve engine power and torque, and thus reduce fuel consumption. This is made possible by modifying the engine mapping. The DC16 106 engine is managed by an EMD1 ECU. Coupled with the GRSO905R gearbox, it can be upgraded to 650hp and 3300Nm of torque, compared with the original 580hp and 2950Nm. Reprogramming is carried out directly via the OBD socket, if the vehicle has not been subject to a recent engine ECU update.

Other options available on Scania V8 with variable geometry turbo, FAP, Adblue and EGR valve

Anything is really possible at Scania. We have the manufacturer's tools, Scania's in-house R&D tools and our own data-modification software. This means we can configure a truck from start to finish. Deactivation of the EGR valve, particulate filter, Adblue system and even conversion from variable-geometry turbo (VGT) to fixed-geometry turbo (FGT). It is also possible to modify the speed (increase/decrease) to meet more stringent standards in certain countries, limit fuel consumption by limiting speed, or on the contrary gain a few km/h to finish a lap on time...

    Disconnecting anti-pollution peripherals

It is advisable, and almost mandatory, to remove the particulate filter cartridges on the truck to prevent them from becoming blocked and obstructing the passage of gases that could rise up into the intake and turbo, creating excess pressure in the turbo which could lead to its breakdown. If a variable geometry fin were to pass through the engine... the damage could be considerable, otherwise the EGR valve could also be disconnected.

    DC16 106 and DC16 105 motors

Good to know: The engine of the S580 Generation 1 is the twin of the S520, meaning that a 520 nextgen can easily be optimized with big gains without compromising reliability. In fact, all engine peripherals are taken from the 580, and you can find more details on our our dedicated Scania page.
